Prepare for surgery

Prepare for Surgery

At Shanti Hospital, we are committed to ensuring that your surgical experience is as smooth and stress-free as possible. Proper preparation before your orthopedic surgery can help you recover faster and with fewer complications. Below, we’ve outlined important steps to help you get ready for your procedure.

Before Surgery:

  1. Preoperative Consultation:
    • Your surgeon will meet with you to discuss your surgery in detail, including what to expect before, during, and after the procedure.
    • Be sure to ask any questions you may have regarding your surgery, recovery time, or potential risks.
    • Your surgeon may also perform additional tests or exams to ensure you are in optimal health for surgery.
  2. Medical History:
    • Inform your healthcare provider about any allergies, current medications, existing medical conditions (such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart issues), and previous surgeries.
    • If you are on any blood thinners or other medications, your surgeon will provide instructions on when to stop taking them before surgery.
  3. Pre-Surgical Instructions:
    • Follow all instructions given by your doctor, including fasting or avoiding food and drink for a specified period before your surgery.
    • If you are required to take medications on the day of surgery, your surgeon will provide specific guidance on what to take and when.
  4. Arrange for Support:
    • Ensure that you have a friend or family member available to drive you to and from the surgery center, as you may not be able to drive after anesthesia.
    • You may also want someone to help you at home during your initial recovery period.
  5. Prepare Your Home:
    • Set up your home for comfort and safety during recovery. Consider placing essential items within easy reach, removing obstacles that could cause trips or falls, and organizing a comfortable resting space.
    • If applicable, plan for any home medical equipment you may need, such as crutches, a walker, or a brace.

Day of Surgery:

  1. Arrive Early:
    • Plan to arrive at the surgery center at least 2 hours before your scheduled procedure time. This allows time for check-in, preparation, and any last-minute questions or assessments.
    • Bring a valid ID, your insurance card, and any necessary paperwork.
  2. Personal Care:
    • Avoid wearing makeup, jewelry, or lotions on the day of surgery. These items can interfere with the surgical process.
    • Wear loose, comfortable clothing that is easy to remove, as you may need to change into a hospital gown.
  3. Follow Fasting Instructions:
    • Follow your doctor’s fasting instructions carefully. This may include no eating or drinking for 5 hours before your surgery.
  4. Medical Clearances:
    • If your surgeon has asked for any specific tests or clearances (such as blood work, a physical exam, or an EKG), be sure to have these completed ahead of time.

After Surgery:

  1. Recovery Expectations:
    • Immediately after your surgery, you will be taken to a recovery room where the medical staff will monitor you as you wake up from anesthesia.
    • You may feel groggy, and some pain or discomfort is normal. Your healthcare team will work with you to manage any pain and make sure you are comfortable.
  2. Post-Surgical Care Instructions:
    • Your doctor will provide detailed instructions on how to care for the surgical site, manage pain, and any restrictions you should follow during recovery.
    • You may need to schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and ensure healing is proceeding as expected.

Important Reminders:

  • Bring a list of all medications you are currently taking (including over-the-counter medications and supplements).
  • Don’t forget to arrange for post-surgery transportation and support.
  • If you experience any unusual symptoms, such as a fever, increased pain, or swelling after surgery, contact our office immediately.
